Osaka Electric Tramway

…Following the government-run railway between Kyoto and Kobe in 1877, the first private railway in Japan, the Hankai Railway (now Nankai Electric Railway), opened between Namba and Yamatogawa in 1885, and reached Sakai three years later. The Koya Railway (now Nankai Koya Line) opened in 1998, the Nankai Main Line in 1903, the Hanshin Main Line (Hanshin Electric Railway) in 1905, the Minoo-Arima Railway (now Hankyu Railway) and the Keihan Electric Railway in 1910, and the Osaka Electric Tramway (now Kintetsu Railway) in 1914, and by the beginning of the Showa era, the basic form of the current private railway network had been established. These private railways focused on diversifying the development of areas along their lines, such as residential areas, amusement parks, and sports grounds, and factories also moved into those areas, leading to the rapid growth of commuter towns and industrial cities, which transformed the rural landscape around Osaka. …

...The main lines include standard gauge lines between Namba and Kashikojima (Osaka Line, Yamada Line, etc.), between Fuse and Kintetsu Nara (Nara Line), between Ise-Nakagawa and Kintetsu Nagoya (Nagoya Line), and between Kyoto and Kashihara-Jingu-mae (Kyoto Line, etc.), as well as 1067mm gauge lines between Osaka Abenobashi and Yoshino (Minami Osaka Line) and between Ibi and Kuwana (Yoro Line). The core of the predecessor railways was the Osaka Electric Tramway (Nara Line, originally called Nara Tramway), founded in 1910, which linked up with the related Sangu Express Railway (Yamada Line) and ran the longest distance train in Japan at the time, covering 137.3 km between Uehonmachi (Osaka) and Ujiyamada in 1931.
