Grebel and Felix Mantz (c. 1480-1527), were initially enthusiastic disciples of Zwingli, but became disillusioned with Zwingli, who always cooperated with the city council and would not proceed with the Reformation without its support, and broke away from him to form the Anabaptists. The statement of their creed was the Schleitheim Confession, drafted by Michael Sattler (c. 1490-1527), and it was characterized by a thorough pacifism that rejected oaths, public office, military service, and the use of violence, as well as a decisive separation from secular society. …
