Mochiyo Ouchi

Mochiyo Ouchi
Year of death: July 28, 1441 (August 14, 1441)
Year of birth: 1394
A military commander in the Muromachi period. His childhood name was Kuro. He held the rank of Shoyu (junior assistant minister of the Ministry of Justice) and Shuri-no-taifu (chief of the Shuri-no-daifu). He was the son of Yoshihiro. After Morimi's death in 1431, he traveled to Kyushu to fight against the forces of Shoni and Otomo. The following year, he won the battle for succession against Ouchi Mochimori, and inherited the position of Shugo (military governor) of Suo, Nagato, and Buzen. He led the servants and local lords of Chugoku and Kyushu in an attack on the Shoni and Otomo clans, and in August 1433, he defeated Shoni Mitsusada at Akizuki Castle in Chikuzen, and in the following year, he overthrew Otomo Mochinao at Himetake Castle in Bungo. In January of the following year, he returned to Suo. In the 11th year, he received an order from Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori to go to Kyoto, but he did not obey, and one of his territories in Aki Province was confiscated. Taking advantage of the fact that a Korean envoy arrived in Japan in the same year, he persuaded the shogunate to pardon Yoshiyori, the surviving son of Mitsusada of the Shoni clan, who was his rival, in February of the following year, and traveled to Kyoto. In 1441, he was present at the assassination of Yoshinori, and died from the wounds he received at that time.
