FAMOUS Project

Japanese: FAMOUS計画 - フェイマスけいかく

A detailed survey of the central axis of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge conducted by a joint French-American team in 1974. This is an abbreviation for French-American Mid-Ocean Undersea Study. Because the seafloor spreading theory was based mainly on inferences from observations of the ocean floor from above sea level, this project aimed to observe and study the actual spreading process in the same detail as geological research on land, using the deep-sea research vessels Alvin (USA), Siana, and Archimedes (all French), and produced significant results.

1974年に実施されたフランス･アメリカの合同チームによる大西洋中央海嶺中軸部の精密調査事業。French‐American Mid‐Ocean Undersea Studyの略。海底拡大説は主として海面上からの海底観測の結果からの推論であったので，現実の拡大過程を陸上での地質研究と同じ詳しさで観察，研究しようという意図の下に，深海潜水調査船，アルビン(アメリカ)，シアナ，アルキメデス(ともにフランス)を駆使して行われ，多大の成果をおさめた。
