Located in the southwestern tip of Connecticut, USA, facing the Long Island Sound, it is the state's largest industrial city. Population 139,529 (2000). A wide variety of industries are thriving, including electrical, machinery, food, auto parts, clothing, plastics, firearms, helicopters, and pharmaceuticals. The town was founded in 1639 under the name Pikwonock, and after changing its name several times, it adopted its current name in 1800 and became a city in 1836. After the Civil War, industry developed rapidly. It is the home of the University of Bridgeport and Bridgeport Technical Institute, and has many sports and recreational facilities as well as seaside parks.
