A mammal of the family Delphinidae in the suborder Odontoceti. A small oceanic dolphin with a long snout that is found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. It often leaps onto the surface of the water and spins its body (hence the English name spinner). From the waters off Hawaii to the Ogasawara Islands and southern Kyushu, a type of dolphin with a body length of about 2m is found, with a black-brown back, a white belly, and a wide gray-white band on the middle side of the body. This dorsal fin is of a normal dolphin type, but in the eastern Pacific, a type with a dorsal fin that slopes forward is found. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
