…The upper reaches of the river ended at Aterazawa (now Oe-machi), but in 1694 (7th year of Genroku), a canal was excavated by Nishimura Kyuzaemon, a merchant from Yonezawa who was a client of the government, and this canal also led to the Okitama Basin. Shimizu, Oishida, and Funamachi maintained privileges as the three river banks of the Mogami River from early on, but in the Kyoho era (1716-1736), Teratsu (now Tendo City) and Motodate (now Sagae City) were newly recognized as river banks. Most of the river boats on the Mogami River were divided into Sakata boats and Mogami boats, mainly Oishida boats, both of which were town boats owned by merchants. …
