A village in Ichishi District, central west of Mie Prefecture. Population 8,015 (1995). Bordering Nara Prefecture to the west, nearly 90% of the village area is forest, with mountains over 1,000m above sea level such as Mt. Kuroso and Mt. Miune towering on the prefectural border. The Kumozu River, which flows into Ise Bay, flows north through the center, and the Hatemata River joins it in the north. The Nabari River also flows north in the west. Although it is located in the mountains, it is an important route connecting Ise and Yamato, and during the Nanboku-cho period, Kiriyama Castle (Take Castle) was built as the castle of the Kitabatake clan, the governor of Ise Province. It is believed that a castle town was formed in the Kamitaki and Shimotaki areas, and the Kitabatake clan's residence was called the Taki Palace. It was the clan's base until they moved to Okawachi Castle (present-day Matsusaka City) following the invasion of Oda Nobunaga at the end of the Sengoku period.
