White-striped butterfly - White-striped butterfly

White-striped butterfly - White-striped butterfly

A butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera and family Pieridae of the class Insecta. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, with its southern limit being Yakushima. It is a common butterfly, but is extremely rare on Tsushima. Its wing span is about 60 mm. It resembles the common cabbage white, but can be distinguished by the dark stripes along the veins of its wings. Its Japanese name is based on this characteristic. The first generation of spring types appear in early spring, from late March to April, in the plains and low mountain areas of the Kanto region and western Japan. After that, they appear continuously until early autumn, and all but the first generation become summer types with well-developed black spots. The larvae feed on wild Brassicaceae plants, cultivated radishes, and sometimes Brassica . They overwinter as pupae.
