…In 1608, he traveled to Mexico with his mistress, where he died. His masterpiece is the two-part work Guzmán de Alfarache (1599, 1602), the most widely read in 17th-century Spain. It is considered a typical example of the so-called “picaresque” novel, and is an autobiographical tale of the picaro (villain) Guzmán’s adventures in Spain and Italy, in which he uses all his cunning and vice. The work’s underlying theme of original sin, and the fact that the protagonist repents of his past sins and becomes a true Christian at the end, make it the most popular interpretation today to see it as a literary expression of the Counter-Reformation ideals of the time. …
