A highway built by Darius I of the Achaemenid Empire between Susa and Sardis and on to Ephesus. It began at Susa in southern Iran, passed through northwestern Mesopotamia, and reached Ionian cities such as Sardis. It was over 2,400 km long. The king's messengers were stationed at each stop along the route, and the journey took seven days each way (rather than three months). The road helped to strengthen the unity of the Persian Empire and promote trade.
