Died September 1559, Verona. Italian architect. After studying under his father Giovanni, who was also an architect, and his uncle Bartolomeo, he went to Rome to study under Bramante and G. Sangallo. From 1509 to 1528, he was the general director of the construction of the Basilica of San Domenico in Orvieto. He also designed the Basilica of Santa Margherita (1519) and the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Montefiascone. He also showed his talent as a castle architect, designing the fortress of the Lido in Venice (1528-?), the Porta Nuova in Verona (1533-1540), the Porta San Zeno (1541), and the Porta Stupa (1542-1547), which became models for later castle architecture. He also designed some of the most important palazzos in the history of architecture, such as Palazzo Bebilacca in Verona, Palazzo Pompeii, and Palazzo Grimani in Venice. He is considered to be one of the first Mannerist architects, as he brought the classical style of the High Renaissance to northern Italy and created a new direction.

イタリアの建築家。建築家の父ジョバンニ，および叔父バルトロメオに学んだのち，ローマに出てブラマンテ，G.サンガロに師事。 1509～28年オルビエトのサン・ドメニコ聖堂の建築総監督をつとめる。またモンテフィアスコーネのサンタ・マルゲリータ聖堂 (1519) ，サンタ・マリア・デレ・グラツィエ聖堂を設計。城砦建築家としても才能を発揮し，のちの城砦建築の範となったベネチアのリドの城砦 (28～?) ，ベロナのポルタ・ヌオーバ (33～40) ，ポルタ・サン・ゼノ (41) ，ポルタ・ストゥーパ (42～47) などの城門を設計した。また，ベロナのパラッツォ・ベビラッカ，パラッツォ・ポンペイ，ベネチアのパラッツォ・グリマニなどの建築史上重要なパラッツォ建築を残した。彼は，盛期ルネサンスの古典様式を北イタリアにもたらし，新しい方向を生み出した建築家であり，マニエリスム建築家の最初の一人と考えられる。
