During the Five Dynasties (907-960), between the Tang and Song dynasties, China was divided into three cultural regions: Central Plains, Shu, and Jiangnan. Each region boasted its own unique culture and had many interactions with each other. What is notable about the art world of this period is the remarkable development of painting styles, which marked a peak not only in the history of Chinese art but also in the history of world art. Five dynasties were replaced in the Central Plains, but amid the wars, ink-wash landscape painting developed greatly. It was Jing Hao who combined the ink-on-ink expression of ink-wash landscape painting, which emerged in the late Tang dynasty, with traditional line drawing elements, and this established the foundation for northern landscape painting, which was inherited by the strongly local style of painting by Li Cheng, Guan Tong, Fan Kuan, and others in the early Northern Song dynasty.

中国，唐と宋との間にはさまれた五代(907‐960)の時代は，中国が中原･蜀･江南の3文化圏に分かれ，それぞれが独自の文化を誇り，かつ相互に交流していた。この時代の美術界で目だつのは絵画の様式展開のめざましさで，中国のみならず世界の美術史のなかでも一つの頂点をなしている。中原では五つの王朝が交替したが，戦乱のなかで，水墨山水画が大きく展開した。唐後半に起こった潑墨山水画の墨面による表現と，従来の線描的要素を結合させたのが荆浩であり，ここに北方系山水画の基礎が固められ，北宋初期の李成，関仝（かんどう），范寛らの地方性の強い画風に継承されていく。
