Initiation reaction - Initiation reaction

An elementary reaction that acts as a trigger for a series of reactions, such as a chain reaction. For example, in the reaction of hydrogen and chlorine to produce hydrogen chloride, the initiating reaction is the dissociation of chlorine molecules into chlorine atoms by heat or light.
