She was born in Marugame, Sanuki Province (Kagawa Prefecture). Her father was the Confucian scholar Inoue Hon'ga, and her mother was Watanabe Magozaemon's daughter Sakae, later known as Sakarin-ni. From an early age, she studied women's instruction books, waka poetry, stories, and Chinese classics, and at the age of 16, she composed the poem "Shojofu." In 1681 (Tenwa 1), at the age of 22, she was summoned to Edo by Yoshoin, the mother of Kyogoku Takatoyo, the lord of Marugame Domain. During this time, she wrote "Tokai Kikou." In Edo, she interacted with famous scholars and writers such as Amenomori Hoshu and Hayashi Houka, and many feudal lords tried to invite her after hearing about her talent. She also wrote the diary "Edo Nikki" (Diary of a Trip to the East Sea) from her stay in Edo. In 1689 (Genroku 2), when she was 30 years old, Yoshoin passed away and she returned to Marugame. During this time, she wrote "Kika Nikki" (Diary of a Trip to the Hometown). In the same year, she married Mita Shigezaemon Muneju, a samurai of the same domain. Although she experienced incidents such as the extinction of the Inoue family line when her younger brother Masumoto committed seppuku, she continued to live a stable life as a housewife. In 1710, at the age of 51, her husband died and she retired to live in seclusion, devoting her later years to literature.
