The indigenous people of Tasmania, an island in the south of the Australian continent, were drastically reduced in number by massacres and other means after the arrival of white people in 1803, and the pure Tasmanian aborigines became extinct in 1876. Because the remaining records are very poor, we know nothing in detail about their language, especially about its grammar. However, in terms of phonology, it is said to have similarities with the aboriginal languages ​​of mainland Australia in terms of the distinction of sounds and the rules for combining sounds. There are apparently at least 16 tribes at the time of the arrival of white people, and these are said to be classified into eight to 12 languages. It is unclear whether it is of the same family as the aboriginal languages ​​of mainland Australia, and also its family history with other languages.

オーストラリア大陸の南にあるタスマニア島の原住民は、1803年の白人到来以後、殺戮(さつりく)などで激減し、純粋のタスマニア原住民は1876年に絶滅した。残された記録が非常に貧弱であるため、彼らの言語について詳しいことはなにもわからない。とくに文法についての資料は乏しい。しかし、音韻の面では、音の区別、音の組合せ方の規則などの点で、オーストラリア本土の原住民語と共通点があるといわれる。白人到来時に少なくとも16の部族があったらしいが、それらは八ないし12の言語に分類されるといわれる。オーストラリア本土の原住民語と同じ系統であるかどうかは不明であり、また他の言語との系統も不明である。
