...Buddhist memorial tablets are equivalent to the Confucian priest (shinshu) and the Shinto spirit representative (mitamashiro). They are believed to have been introduced to Japan from China by Zen monks, but before that there were the folkloric ihaigi and incense burners (jars) still seen today in the southern islands. The En-taireki records a discussion in 1358 (Shohei 13, Enbun 3) about the wording of the memorial tablet at Ashikaga Takauji's Buddhist ceremony on the 5th and 7th day of the month, and the Rokuon-inden Seisō-ki records the creation of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu's memorial tablet in 1408 (Oei 15)....
