Bone marrow is the hematopoietic tissue that produces red and white blood cells. When it is active in producing blood, it is red (red bone marrow), and when this activity stops, it is replaced by fatty tissue and appears yellow (yellow bone marrow). As we age, the former decreases and the latter increases, but the bones close to the center of the body (vertebrae, hip bone, sternum, ribs, skull, etc.) retain red bone marrow until old age.
