A Russian (Soviet) poet. The son of a blacksmith in Smolensk Oblast. He gained attention with his epic poem Muravia (1936), which was about collectivization of agriculture, and during World War II, he gained national popularity with his cycle of poems, Vasily Cherkin (1941-1945), which had a soldier as the protagonist. He later published long poems, Far, Far Away (1950-1960) and Cherkin in the Other World (1963), and worked hard to liberalize the Soviet literary scene as editor-in-chief of the magazine New World.

ロシア（ソ連）の詩人。スモレンスク州の鍛冶屋の子。農業集団化をテーマにした叙事詩《ムラビア国》（1936年）で注目され，第２次大戦中に，一兵士を主人公にした連作詩《ワシーリー・チョールキン》（1941年―1945年）で国民的な人気を得た。のち，長詩《遠い，遠いかなた》（1950年―1960年），《あの世のチョールキン》（1963年）などを発表，また雑誌《新世界》編集長として，ソ連文壇の自由化のために尽くした。
