...Folk songs, folk music, and folk dances are often classified based on these functions. For example, Peter Kennedy, who collected folk songs from various parts of the UK and Ireland, classified folk songs using concepts such as courtship, love, seduction, unhappy marriages, occupations, rural life, gatherings, recreation, events, and traveling people (1975). In Japan, Kunio Yanagita (1936) proposed classifying folk songs into ten types, which was also a classification based on the social context in which the folk songs were embedded.
