Kamado Shrine

Japanese:
Kamado Shrine

The shrine is located on Mount Homan, which lies on the border between Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Chikushino City, and Umi Town, Kasuya County. The upper shrine is located at the summit, and the lower shrine and shrine office (in Uchiyama, Dazaifu City) are located at the foot of the mountain. Tamayorihime is the main deity, and Empress Jingu and Hachiman Okami are also enshrined as secondary deities. Since ancient times, the shrine has been considered a sacred mountain in the region, but it is said that the shrine was founded when the eight million gods were enshrined there to ward off evil spirits in the northeast when Dazaifu was built. It is a shrine listed in the Engishiki (working scriptures), and is ranked Shoichii (first rank). It was syncretized with Buddhism, and shrine temples such as Kamadoyama-dera were built there, and Saicho, Ennin, and others prayed there when they traveled to China. From the Middle Ages onwards, it flourished as a sacred place for Shugendo, and at its peak it had 370 temples, but the Shinto-Buddhist separation order issued during the Meiji Restoration caused the mountain ascetics to leave the mountain. It was designated a small shrine by the government in 1895 (Meiji 28). The ritual remains, sutra mound remains, and temple ruins within the grounds are valuable.
