Mesophytes are plants that grow under moderate moisture conditions, and correspond to xerophytes and aquatic plants. There are a great many plants that fall into the category of mesophytes, so there are few cases where they are specifically distinguished as mesophytes. Morphologically, they have well-developed above-ground parts, medium-thick broad leaves, and do not have any particular fleshy forms, water-storing tissue, or respiratory roots. Examples of forest plants include the zelkova tree, white oak, beech, sugar maple, Japanese elm, white alder, Japanese laurel, lily of the valley, and eggplant. Mesophytes are generally interpreted as species that have strong competition for survival between species and are capable of living in moderate locations as their ecological optimum.
