A general term for birds of the passerine order, family Furnariidae. Widely distributed in Central and South America, with 24 species in Central America (of which 5 are endemic) and about 210 species in South America. These species have adapted to a variety of environments, from coastal reefs to wetlands, farmland, grasslands, forests, and alpine rocks. Total length is about 8-28cm. Sexes are the same color and size, and with the exception of a few species, the chest and abdomen are white or light brown, and the head, back, upper wings, and tail are yellowish brown, brown, or reddish brown, giving the birds an overall brownish color.
