Ise ebi (Japanese spiny lobster)

A shrimp of the family Pleistidae in the Crustacea class that can reach a body length of 35 cm, it is one of the most important fishery species along with the kuruma prawn (illustration). It is uniformly deep reddish brown with no special markings. Its exoskeleton is hard and its cephalothorax is densely covered with spines. Each abdominal segment has a horizontal groove on the dorsal surface. All of the thoracic legs are strong, except for the fifth leg in the female, which is an incomplete pair of claws that is used to clean the eggs carried on the abdomen. It inhabits shallow reefs, but is not very mobile, only shifting depth slightly depending on the season. During the day, it hides on rocky shelves, but in the evening it goes out in search of various shellfish, worms, shrimp, crabs, and other small benthic animals.

体長35cmに達する甲殻綱イセエビ科のエビで，クルマエビと並んで水産上の最重要種（イラスト）。一様に濃い赤褐色で，特別の斑紋はない。外骨格は硬く，頭胸甲にはとげが密生する。各腹節には背面に1本の横溝がある。胸脚はすべてじょうぶで，雌の第5脚だけが不完全なはさみになっており，これで腹部に抱いた卵の清掃をする。浅海の岩礁にすむが，季節による深浅移動がわずかにあるだけで，移動性は小さい。昼間は岩棚に潜んでいるが，夕方から各種の貝，ゴカイ，エビ･カニ類など底生性の小動物を求めて出歩く。
