年齢の増加に伴う変化のことで，老年期以降の状態は老化あるいは老衰ともいう。年齢とともに細胞の再生補充が次第に減少してくるため，機能の発現や維持能力が低下してくる。ニューロンのような細胞では，再生できないため，特に加齢現象が顕著に現れる。加齢は生あるものすべてに起きる現象であり，誕生・成長・死の過程すべてを表現する言葉であるが，一般的に加齢という場合には，老化の部分をいうことが多い。
