Mexican-American War. War between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848. The United States used a border dispute to provoke Mexico into war. As a result of the United States' military victory, Mexico abandoned Texas and ceded New Mexico and California for $15 million. This completed the United States' continental territories, excluding Alaska.
