Chubei Tanida

Japanese: 谷田忠兵衛 - たんだ・ちゅうべえ

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A lacquer artist from the mid-Edo period. Born in Edo, he was later employed by the 10th Awa feudal lord, Hachisuka Shigeyoshi, and moved to Tokushima. His colorful style was characterized by patterns painted with yellow, brown, green, and white lacquer on a vermilion lacquer ground, and he established a unique style by combining maki-e and gold-kogashi (a method of pressing gold leaf and then rubbing it with a pad to create a mottled pattern). His representative works include the "Flower and Grass Lacquer Painting Flower Viewing Lunch Box" (owned by Tokushima Castle Museum) and the "Flower and Grass Lacquer Painting Food Basket" (owned by Tokyo National Museum). <References> "Maki-e Shi-den/Nurishi-den," edited by the Fuzoku Emaki Tosho Kankokai.

江戸中期の漆芸家。江戸の生まれで,のちに阿波10代藩主蜂須賀重喜に召し抱えられ徳島に移る。作風は,朱漆の地に黄,茶,緑,白などの彩漆を用いて文様を描いた彩り豊かなもので,蒔絵や,金こがし(金箔を押してからタンポなどでこすり,斑文を出す方法)なども併用して独特の表現を確立した。代表作として「草花漆絵花見弁当」(徳島城博物館蔵),「草花漆絵食籠」(東京国立博物館蔵)などをあげることができる。<参考文献>風俗絵巻図書刊行会編『蒔絵師伝・塗師伝』
