Stratospheric circulation

Japanese: 成層圏循環 - せいそうけんじゅんかん

Usually refers to large-scale air currents in the stratosphere. Large-scale atmospheric movements in the stratosphere, like those in the troposphere, have a greater horizontal velocity than vertical velocity. In other words, movement in the horizontal plane predominates. The stratosphere is characterized by winter circulation and summer circulation. The transition from winter to summer, or from summer to winter, is sudden. The timing of the transition also varies from year to year, with the characteristics of the winter circulation usually disappearing from late February to early April, and the transition into winter circulation in autumn occurring from early to mid-October.

普通，成層圏における大規模な大気の流れを指す。成層圏の大規模な大気運動は，対流圏と同様，鉛直速度に比べ水平速度が大きい。すなわち，水平面内の運動が卓越している。成層圏では冬型循環と夏型循環が特徴的な循環である。冬型から夏型へ，あるいは夏型から冬型への移行は急激に行われる。その移行時期も年による違いがあり，冬型循環の特徴が崩れるのは通常2月下旬から4月上旬にかけて，秋になって冬型循環に入るのは10月上旬から中旬にかけてである。
