Enbi Sennou - Enbi Sennou

A perennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family (APG classification: Caryophyllaceae). The stem is upright and about 50 cm tall. The leaves are broadly lanceolate, about 5 cm long, and pointed at the tip. In summer, several crimson flowers bloom at the end of the stem. The sepals fuse to form a calyx tube about 2 cm long. The petals are divided into many lobes at the tip, of which the two central lobes protrude particularly long, hence the name, which resembles a swallow's tail. It rarely grows wild in the grasslands of the Chubu region of Honshu and Hokkaido, but is sometimes cultivated in gardens. It also grows in northeastern China and its surrounding areas.

ナデシコ科（APG分類：ナデシコ科）の多年草。茎は直立し高さ約50センチメートル。葉は広披針(こうひしん)形で長さ約5センチメートル、先はとがる。夏に茎の先に数個の深紅色の花をつける。萼片(がくへん)は合着して萼筒となり、長さ約2センチメートル。花弁は先が多数の裂片に分かれるが、そのうち中央の二つの裂片がとくに長く突き出るので、これをツバメの尾に見立てて名がついた。本州の中部地方や北海道の草原にまれに自生するが、庭園に栽培されることもある。中国東北部およびその周辺にも生育する。
