Ebina Danjo - Ebina Danjo

Japanese:
Ebina Danjo - Ebina Danjo

A leading Christian teacher during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born as the son of a samurai from the Yanagawa domain in Fukuoka. Studied at a domain school, he entered the Kumamoto Western School in 1872 (Meiji 5). Influenced by L. L. Janes, a teacher at the school, he signed the "Purpose of Mission" at Hanaokayama in 1876 and was baptized by Janes in the same year. He was a member of the so-called Kumamoto Band. After graduating from the school, he entered the Doshisha English School. While a student, he evangelized in Annaka (Gunma Prefecture) and founded the Annaka Church with Niijima Jo. After graduating from Doshisha, he became the pastor of the same church. In 1890, he became president of the Japan Missionary Company, and after serving as pastor of Kobe Church, he became pastor of Hongo Church in Tokyo in 1897. He began publishing the magazine "Shinjin" in 1900 (Meiji 33), and his sermons at Hongo Church attracted many young people and students. Among them were Yoshino Sakuzo and Suzuki Bunji. From 1901, he debated with Uemura Masahisa over the understanding of Christ. In 1920 (Taisho 9), he became president of Doshisha. His strong nationalism and liberal theological ideas tended to deviate somewhat from "orthodox" Christianity, and he actively supported the Russo-Japanese War, but his wide-ranging interests attracted attention.
