The Latin dialects in the north and center of the peninsula, which became the basis of Spanish, had already split into three smaller dialects. These dialects can be divided into three major ones: the Aragonese dialect in the east, the Castilian dialect in the center, and the Leonese dialect in the west. Politically, at the beginning of the Reconquista War, the only Christian countries in the north were the Kingdom of Aragon and the Kingdom of Leon, and Castile was merely a county within the Kingdom of Leon.
