Greek politician. Born on the island of Corfu (Kerkyra). His family name comes from Capo d'Istria, Count of Istria. He entered politics when the Ionian Federation was established under Turkish suzerainty (1800), and in 1809 he was invited by the Russian government to become a Russian diplomat, where he demonstrated his talent at the Congress of Vienna. He then became Russian foreign minister, earning the ire of Austria's Metternich. He refused to become president of the secret Greek independence society, the Fraternity, but in 1827 he was elected as the first Greek president by the Greek National Assembly, and after visiting various European countries, he landed in Nafplio at the beginning of the following year in 1828 and took up the presidency. However, his Russian-style administration drew opposition from influential Greek figures who had contributed to independence, and he was assassinated on October 9, 1831.
