Exedra (English spelling)

Exedra (English spelling)
An architectural term. Originally meaning a seat attached to the side. In ancient times, it referred to a semicircular protruding part at the end of a basilica, which was used as a common room in a residence, a courtyard of a Hellenistic temple, or a public building, and the name was derived from the fact that benches were placed there. The latter is said to be the prototype of the apse of medieval Christian basilica. From the late Renaissance to the Mannerism period, it was also placed at the end of a garden.
