A representative daily newspaper in the Tohoku region. With its headquarters in Sendai, it distributes throughout the Tohoku region, including Miyagi Prefecture. Its circulation in Miyagi Prefecture far surpasses that of other national newspapers by a large margin. It was first published on January 17, 1897 (Meiji 30) by Ichiriki Kenjiro (1863-1929) with the company motto of "Promoting Tohoku and being impartial." Since then, it has developed as a newspaper run by the Ichiriki family. It attracted attention for its progressive pages, and during the Russo-Japanese War, it focused on news reporting, such as issuing special editions, and overwhelmed other companies that were ahead of it. In 1908 (Meiji 41), it introduced the first Marinoni rotary press in Tohoku. In 1922 (Taisho 11), it began publishing an evening edition. In 1946 (Showa 21), it became a joint-stock company, and in August 1975, it also began printing in Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture. In 1981, the company completed the conversion to CTS, and the following year it increased the size of its type, playing a leading role in the industry from start to finish. Circulation: Morning edition: 481,500 copies, Evening edition: 100,000 copies (2009).
