…In Greek mythology, Daedalion, whose daughter was killed by Artemis, lost his sanity in grief and threw himself off the top of Mount Parnassus, but was transformed into a hawk by Apollo. The sacred bird Kirkos, a symbol of the sun and dedicated to Apollo, is thought to be a hawk, crow, or falcon, and is said to be named after the cry of this bird, along with Circe, the daughter of the sun god Helios. The hawk also represents the soul, and in medieval religious paintings, the image of it tearing apart a rabbit or sparrow (a symbol of carnal desire) is used as a metaphor for the superiority of the spirit, while in Christian iconography it is also considered to be a bird representing jealousy. …
