A general term for New World monkeys belonging to the Saimiri genus of the Capuchin family in the Primate order. There are the common squirrel monkey S. sciurea (illustration) and the red-eared squirrel monkey S. oerstedi . They are about the size of a large squirrel and are the smallest of the Capuchin family except for the Goerdi's monkey. Head and body length is 25-35cm. Their faces are light-coloured, with only the area around their mouths being black. They are found in a wide range of habitats, from the wetlands of Central and South America to tropical rainforests and dry forests. They are omnivorous, eating insects, fruits, leaves, etc., but they particularly prefer insects, and are active in searching for prey. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
