A general term for Muslims who live in the Malabar region of South India (now Kerala state), known in Malayalam as Māppilla. They are said to be the mixed race descendants of Arab merchants who arrived in the 9th century. The people who lived along the coast were merchants, while the Moplahs inland were overwhelmingly small-scale farmers. The Moplah farmers in particular were among the poorest class under the harsh landlord system in the Malabar region, and throughout the 19th century they resisted the Madras state government and waged an anti-landlord struggle.
