Japanese: 梵卵 - ぼんらん

A translation of the Sanskrit "Brahmāṇḍa." Meaning "the egg of Brahma," in Hinduism, it is one of the supreme beings who are the origin of the universe. In India, various ideas and theories have been developed regarding the creation of the universe since the Rig-Veda, the oldest document in India. The theory of the creation of the universe from a Brahma egg is one of these, and is discussed in detail in the various Puranas (meaning "ancient tales" or "old legends"), the holy scriptures of Hinduism, especially the Brahmāṇḍa-purāṇa.

サンスクリットの〈ブラフマーンダbrahmāṇḍa〉の訳。〈ブラフマー神(梵天)の卵〉の意味で，ヒンドゥー教において，宇宙開闢（かいびやく）の根源である最高存在とされるものの一つ。インドにおいて，宇宙創造に関しては，最古の文献である《リグ･ベーダ》以来さまざまな思想･学説が展開されているが，梵卵からの宇宙創造の説もその一つで，ヒンドゥー教の聖典である各種のプラーナ(〈古譚〉〈古伝話〉の意)，とくに《ブラフマーンダ･プラーナBrahmāṇḍa‐purāṇa》において詳細に論じられている。
