Stick chart

A nautical chart made by tying together coconut leaf stalks and shells. The people of the Marshall Islands in Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean are known for having mastered the various phenomena of ocean swells and for having used this knowledge to develop their own excellent navigation techniques. They learned from experience that ocean swells change after hitting an island, and this enabled them to locate the location of a target island. The stick chart embodies the basic concept of this navigation technique, with shells showing the relative positions of the islands and coconut leaf stalks showing the direction of the swells.
