Single sideband modulation

Also called SSB. An amplitude modulated signal has three frequency components: a carrier, an upper sideband, and a lower sideband. Of these components, the information-bearing parts are in both sidebands, and communication is possible using only one of them. Single sideband modulation is a method of sending only either the upper or lower sideband. Since the single sideband method still requires a carrier for demodulation, there are three types: one that sends the entire carrier from the transmitter, one that sends a reduced carrier with a reduced carrier amplitude, and one that does not send any carrier at all, i.e., a suppressed carrier.

SSBともいう。振幅変調された信号は，搬送波，上側波帯および下側波帯の三つの周波数成分を有している。これらの成分の中で情報を有する部分は両方の側波帯であり，しかもそのいずれか一方のみで通信可能である。単側波帯変調とは，上または下側波帯のいずれか一方のみを送る方式である。単側波帯方式の場合も復調には搬送波を必要とするので，送信機から全搬送波を送るもの，搬送波の振幅を小さくした低減搬送波を送るものおよびまったく搬送波を送らないもの，すなわち抑圧搬送波の3種類がある。
