Sounji Temple

This temple is of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, Daitokuji school, located in Yumoto, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture. Its name is Kintozan. The principal image is Shaka Nyorai. In 1521 (Taiei 1), in accordance with the will of Hojo Soun (Sozui) of Odawara, his son Ujitsuna invited the 83rd abbot, Iten Sosei, from Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto to be the founder of the temple, and built it as a family temple for the Hojo clan. In 1590 (Tensho 18), Toyotomi Hideyoshi used this temple as his headquarters for his attack on Odawara. After the fall of Odawara Castle, the temple lost the protection of the Hojo clan and was abandoned, but in 1648 (Keian 1), it was restored with a red seal letter from Tokugawa Iemitsu. Within the temple are the graves of five generations of the Odawara Hojo clan - Soun, Ujitsuna, Ujiyasu, Ujimasa, and Ujinao - as well as the grave and haiku monument of renga (linked verse) master Sogi. Temple treasures include a portrait of Hojo Soun, a set of woven writing table and inkstone box (all of which are nationally important cultural properties), and portraits of Hojo Ujitsuna and Ujiyasu (prefecturally designated cultural properties).

神奈川県足柄下(あしがらしも)郡箱根町湯本にある臨済(りんざい)宗大徳寺派の寺。金湯山(きんとうざん)と号する。本尊は釈迦如来(しゃかにょらい)。1521年（大永1）小田原(おだわら)の北条早雲（宗瑞(そうずい)）の遺命によってその子氏綱(うじつな)が、京都大徳寺から第83世以天宗清(いてんそうせい)を請じて開山とし、北条家の菩提(ぼだい)寺として建立した。1590年（天正18）豊臣(とよとみ)秀吉の小田原攻めにあたって秀吉はこの寺を本陣とした。小田原城落城後は北条氏の外護(げご)を失って廃寺同様となったが、1648年（慶安1）徳川家光(いえみつ)から朱印状を与えられて復興された。寺内には早雲、氏綱、氏康(うじやす)、氏政(うじまさ)、氏直(うじなお)の小田原北条氏5代の墓、連歌(れんが)師宗祇(そうぎ)の墓と句碑がある。寺宝には北条早雲画像、織物張文台及硯箱(すずりばこ)1組（以上は国重要文化財）、北条氏綱・氏康画像（県指定文化財）などがある。
