Jia Bao-yu (English name)

The protagonist of Cao Xueqin's novel "Dream of the Red Chamber" from the Qing Dynasty. He is the heir to the Jia family, a noble family in Chang'an that soon fell into ruin. After a tragic love affair with his cousin Lin Daiyu, he passes the imperial examination but rejects worldly fame and wealth, and leaves his crumbling family behind. It is said that the character of Jia Baoyu was modeled on the character virtue of the early Qing literati Nalan, but it is thought that the author's own experience of growing up in a similarly fallen aristocratic family plays a significant role. Jia Baoyu believes that all the spiritual energy between heaven and earth is concentrated in women and that men are the dregs of them, and therefore often speaks words criticizing the current politics and morality that are dominated by the dregs. His character became the subject of debate in the so-called "Dream of the Red Chamber" debate that began around 1954, but in the end the prevailing opinion was that Jia Baoyu was a rebel against feudal morality and that his act of abandoning his family was significant as an act of resistance.

中国，清の曹雪芹の小説『紅楼夢』の主人公。長安の大貴族でやがて没落する賈家の御曹子。従妹の林黛玉 (たいぎょく) との悲恋ののち，科挙に合格しながら現世の名誉や富を拒否して，崩壊しかかった家をあとに行くえをくらませてしまう。清初の文人納蘭 (のうらん) 性徳がモデルといわれたが，同じような没落貴族の家に育った作者自身の体験が，かなりの要素を占めていると考えられる。賈宝玉は天地間の霊気はすべて女に集り，男はそのかすであるという考えの持主で，したがってそのかすの支配する現在の政治，道徳などを批判する言辞をしばしば口にする。その人物像は，1954年頃から起ったいわゆる「紅楼夢論争」において論議の的となったが，結局，賈宝玉を封建道徳に対する反逆者であるとし，家を捨てるという行動も一つのレジスタンスとして意義を認めるという意見が支配的となった。
