A post station that has existed since the Middle Ages, located in Hoi County, Mikawa Province, now Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture. In 1553, Imagawa Yoshimoto established the horse-drawn carriage system for Oyu-juku, with the fare set at 10 sen per ri. In 1601, the Tokugawa clan designated it as a post station on the Tokaido road. Initially, the horse-drawn carriages on the outbound route ran from Fujikawa (now Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture) to Oyu-juku, while the horse-drawn carriages on the inbound route ran from Yoshida (now Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture) to Akasaka (now Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture), with horse-and-saddle relay duties shared between Akasaka-juku and Yoshida-juku. According to the "General Register of Post Towns," the distance to Yoshida-juku was 1.5 ri 4 cho, and 16 cho to Akasaka-juku. The Honzaka Road (Hime Kaido) branched off from the post station, and the distance to Suse (now Toyohashi City), which was connected to the post station, was 4 ri 8 cho. There were only honjin (main inns) and no wakihonjin (side inns), and there were 62 inns. There were many inns employing prostitutes, and in Ota Nanpo's 1801 "Kaigen Kiko" (Travels During the Era of the Era), it is written that "there were many prostitutes in the inns." However, because the inns were small and the burden of transporting horses was heavy, Josukego Village designated 25 villages and was one of the first to use carriages in 1857. In 1872 the horse transport station was abolished, and in 1888 the area was removed from the railway line in opposition to the construction of the Tokaido Line, and gradually lost its prosperity. In 1959 it was incorporated into Toyokawa City. The pine tree-lined street between the inns and Akasaka-juku is a nationally designated natural monument. → Related topics Akasaka | Toyokawa [city] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
