Carpospore - Carpospore

The egg cell of red algae is called an artefact, and the spore that is produced by cell division of the artefact after fertilization is called a carpospore. In the Bangia species, the fertilized artefact itself divides directly to produce numerous carpospores. In true red algae, the carposporophyte develops directly from the fertilized artefact, or the fertilized nucleus is transferred to a synergid cell present near the artefact, from which a carpospore consisting of numerous cells is formed, from which the carposporophyte develops and the carpospore is produced. In many cases, the nuclear phase of the carpospore is 2n, and when the carpospore germinates, it becomes a tetrasporophyte.

紅藻植物の卵細胞を造果器といい、造果器が受精後細胞分裂をして生ずる胞子を果胞子という。ウシケノリ類では、受精した造果器自体が直接分割し、多数個の果胞子を生ずる。真正紅藻類では、受精した造果器から直接果胞子体が発達するか、あるいは造果器の近くに存在する助細胞に受精核を移し、ここから多数の細胞からなる造胞子が形成され、これから果胞子体が発達し、果胞子が生ずる。多くの場合、果胞子の核相は2nであり、果胞子が発芽すると四分胞子体となる。
