…French poet. A central figure in the Pleyard school of poetry. Born into a family of minor nobility near Vendome in central France. Having served in the Italian Wars and been exposed to Renaissance works, his father Louis tried to bring him to the royal court and raise him to be a cultured aristocrat, but he fell ill and decided to pursue a career in poetry. In 1547, together with his fellow student Baif, he began studying humanities and writing poetry under the guidance of Greek scholar Dora at the École Cocret in Paris. Together with his comrades, he formed the group La Brigade, which advocated using classical and Italian poetry as models to improve the expressiveness of the French language and realize a revolution in poetry, and later named seven of them Pleyard. …
