In contrast to the gold and silver coins that were the unified currency established by the Edo Shogunate, the gold and silver coins minted and issued in the feudal domains of Koshu, Kaga, Echigo, Dewa, etc. in the early Edo period were collectively called domain currency. Most domain currency disappeared during the Genroku period (1688-1704) and was unified into Shogunate currency, but there are also cases where they continued to be minted after the Genroku period. The most representative domain currency, Koshu gold, began during the time of the Takeda clan in the Sengoku period, and four families, Matsuki, Nonaka, Yamashita, and Shimura, served as gold mints for Koshu gold.
