Japanese: 間面記法 - けんめんきほう

A method of expressing the plan, scale, and style of architecture used from the Nara period to the Nanboku-cho period. Architecture up until the early Middle Ages consisted of a main building and eaves. The number of spaces between the main building's frontage (beams) and pillars was expressed as "how many spaces." The depth (beams) was omitted, as it was usually two spaces between pillars, and was expressed as the number of eaves on the main building. Eaves came in various forms, from one to four, depending on the building's use and status. For example, "five bays and four sides" means that the main building has a width of five bays and a depth of two bays, with eaves on four sides, for a total width of seven bays and a total depth of four bays.

奈良時代から南北朝時代に用いられた建築の平面，規模，形式を表現する方法。中世前期までの建築は身舎 (母屋) とひさしから成る構成であり，身舎の間口 (梁行) 柱間を「何間」と表わし，奥行 (梁間) は通常柱間2間であったから省略され，身舎に「何面」のひさしがついているかで表記した。ひさしは1～4面まで建物の用途や格式によってさまざまな形態があった。たとえば「五間四面」とあれば間口5間，奥行2間の身舎に4面にひさしを付けたもので，総間口は7間，総奥行は4間になる。
