… In the 1930s, Prague became a center of the film industry, boasting the best film studios in Europe. French films such as “The Volga” (1934), directed by Victor Turjanský and starring Albert Préjean, and “The Golem” (1935), directed by Julien Duvivier, were also made in Prague. Under the Nazi occupation, there was nothing worth seeing in Czechoslovakia, so in 1945, immediately after the liberation of Prague, the film industry was nationalized and the National Film School FAMU was opened in Prague. Then, in 1947, Karel Steklý's “Sirena” won the Grand Prix at the Venice Film Festival, and the puppet animation master Jiri Trnka's “A Year in the Czech Republic” gained international acclaim, marking the beginning of postwar Czechoslovakian cinema. …
