Crepe - クープ (English spelling) crepe

(English spelling) crepe

A general term for crepe and chijimi fabrics made with tightly twisted yarn. Often used to refer to Western-style fabrics. The fabric is woven using tightly twisted yarn for the warp or weft, or both, and is then desizing and scoured to shrink the woven surface and create crinkles. Depending on the direction of twist, the number of twists, and how the twisted yarn is used, a variety of fabrics can be produced.

In the early modern period, with the development of yarn twisting machines, its use increased rapidly, and in addition to the main material of silk, it was applied to cotton, wool, and linen, giving rise to many different types. Silk crepe in particular is used for nightwear, underwear, blouses, etc., because of its soft texture and lightness.
