A bird of the passerine order, family White-eye (illustration). Total length is about 12 cm. The back is dark yellow-green, the throat and undertail are yellow, and the sides are grape-colored. The belly is white. It is characterized by a white ring around the eye. The male and female are the same color. It is found in Japan, South Korea, eastern China, northern Vietnam, the Philippines, etc. In Japan, it is found as a resident or migratory bird in various places from central Hokkaido southward, living in low mountain forests and woodlands. It is rare in northern Japan, but is common in western Japan and in warm island areas such as the Izu and Ogasawara Islands. It prefers broadleaf forests and is rarely found in forests consisting only of conifers.

スズメ目メジロ科の鳥(イラスト)。全長約12cm。背面は暗黄緑色で,のどや下尾筒は黄色く,脇はブドウ色。腹は白い。眼の周囲に白い輪があるのが特徴。雌雄同色。日本,南朝鮮,中国東部,ベトナム北部,フィリピンなどに分布する。日本では北海道中部以南の各地に留鳥または漂鳥として分布し,低山帯の山林や雑木林にすむ。北日本では少なく,西日本や伊豆・小笠原諸島などの温暖な島嶼部に多い。広葉樹の林を好み,針葉樹だけの林には少ない。
